The first desalination project for the 3rd generation nuclear power plant.
The Sanmen Nuclear Power Plant Phase I (2X1250MW) is the first demonstration project of AP1000 nuclear reactor in the world, which is applied with passive technology. The product water of desalination plant is the main source of the nuclear island and the regular island in the whole power plant, which needs high level of both reliability and security. In the desalination process, a dual main piping design is applied before the desalinated water tank. As a result, the desalination equipment is divided into two trains, and connected in units. This kind of connection type enhances the reliability of the system, and guarantees the safe operation of the nuclear power plant.
SWRO Unit
▇ Overview
〉 Capacity: 2 X 177 m3/h
〉 Technology: Untra-filtration (UF) Technology & Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) Technology
〉 Project Type: Engineering Procurement (EP)
〉 Location: Sanmen, Zhejiang Province, China
▇ Main Process
Influent Seawater Quality
Main Performance Index of SWRO
▇ Highlights
〉 Minimal Environmental Impact
The side products of the seawater desalination plant are RO concentrated water and sludge. In this project, the brine from reaction and sedimentation basin will be transferred to the thickening tank. The moisture content of the concentrated sludge will be cut down to 96~97% regularly. The moisture content of the dehydrated sludge will be decreased to 75% after treated by the dehydrator. In that case, the dry sludge cake is easy to be transported and landfilled.
〉 Simple and Convenient Operation Mode
An automatic control system is utilized in various components in this project. The system could achieve an automatic operation of the whole desalination plant, so that minimize the required manpower in this project. Specifically, an automatic and smart data acquisition system is installed and these data will be intelligently analyzed by the programmable logic controller (PLC). The PLC takes over all the automatic control tasks of the desalination plant.
〉 Stability and Reliability
The adoption of the ‘Clarification + Sand filter + UF’ as the pre-treatment process can remove most of the large particles and colloid in the influent. It protects the normal and stable operation of the RO process by slowing down the scaling and fouling process on RO membrane.
SafBon was awarded the Cangzhou seawater desalination project by the local Cangzhou government. It is located in the Bohai Development Zone, Cangzhou, where there is a lack of freshwater resources for both domestic and industrial use. The initiation, launch and completion of this cost effective project is expected to relieve the urgent freshwater needs in the Bohai Development Zone.

Main Process
-
Minimal environmental impact
The side products of seawater desalination plant will be RO concentrate and sludge. The RO concentrate can be reused as the raw material of industrial salt production and the dried sludge will be transported to the landfill and composted.
-
Simple to operate via automation
Automatic control systems with is utilized in various components in the project, including pump, valve and chemical dosing control. An outlet water (freshwater) database will also be established to track the volume of fresh water to each user and the data will be used for water bill calculations.
SWRO Unit
The Water Quality of Seawater Desalination Plant Influent and Effluent
Highlights
As an inaugural and innovative project for seawater desalination in China, the Cangzhou desalination project demonstrates the RO project design capabilities, expertise and experience of SafBon which has increasingly advanced during the past ten years. The completion and successful operation of this project will greatly support SafBon’s efforts to expand its SWRO business to other regions of China, as well as globally.
Yingkou desalination project which is invested, designed, constructed and will be operated by SafBon will have a capacity of project 100,000 m3/d. The project also delivers enough water supply for chemical enterprises in the Xianren island energy chemical industry park.
How to guarantee the high performances of reverse osmosis (RO) membrane is a key factor to evaluate the performance of its pretreatment system. SafBon engineers challenge the conventional technology and decided to use the unique process of dissolved air flotation (DAF) + ceramic flat membranes® (CFM) to solve the algae and red tide attacks during operation.
